Race Report Pier to Pub, Gatorade Triathlon Series Race 2 and Australia Day Swim

1 Year ago I was feeling sorry for myself nursing a broken little toe.

This week was redemption from 12 months ago.

On Monday I put up a little funny post on Facebook which read, “To my little toe on my right foot and your 9 other brothers, A year ago today you managed to end up an a very strange angle and stuffed up my summer race session. You still give me grief from time to time, but I have spoken with the TV Cabinet and he has agreed to keep out of your  way if you could do the same that would be great. Thanks”

Pier to Pub Race Report

I did my normal training week and on Saturday was the 2 ½ drive to Lorne for the Pier to Pub Open Water Swim. I have never been on the Great Ocean Road, well at least I can recall. After the drive to Geelong and then onto Anglesea then onto the coast road; I must say it was stunning, never seen anything like. It was hard to watch the road as well  as the view. When I got to Lorne I started to look for parking, $25, $20 all day parking. I turned up a street near the pub and found parking all day FOC. Perfect just one issue a steep hill. I grabbed my MP3 player, left my gear bag in the car and went for a bit of walk.

Once I got down to Surf Club I found my way to rego and collected my kit, with heaps of time before my race I went for a wonder down the main street getting some food and hot chocolate. Followed by a walk up to the pier where the start line was and then back to the car for the gear bag and drop off what I didn’t need out of the race kit.

I found the change tent put on the wetsuit (half way) grabbed my swim cap, timing belt and goggles and headed up the beach. I ran into a few from my Tri Club had a bit of chat and then headed up and the beach and bumped into 2 from my swim squad and bit more of a chat.

When I got near the start line I zipped up the wetsuit and went in for a bit of dip, the water was clear and little cold, again this was a true open water swim not a bay swim. When I got out of the water I saw a penguin, you could see he was scared with all these open water swimmers around; thank goodness that everyone kept a good distance.

It was not too long before we needed to line up in waves, as we all did I noticed Dave from our Tri Club there in the wave before me. I went up said g-day and good luck before he started.

After Dave’s waved started we were asked to make our way down the boat ramp into the water. It’s a straight course with a deep water start. You basically hover over rope between two buoys. We were give a 1 min and 30secs warning followed by a shotgun blast to start our wave. I hit the start on the Garmin and headed straight down the course. You could see the buoys  on the left hand side of the course counting down from 20 to 1. Half wave down the course I had a look around I could see I was one of the first 5 or so. This was going to be training race, but I changed my mind and pushed I wanted it bad. As we got close to the beach I could feel the waves starting to break, I used this to come into the beach. I ran up the beach and over the line as I did I heard someone call out my name, not sure who it was but it was welcome. From what I could see it was 4th not bad.

My time was 18min 29secs

After changing and catching up with a few peeps I know it was time to head home, followed by getting ready for the Olympic Distance the following day.

Gatorade Triathlon Series Race 2 Race Report

Sunday, up early like 4:30am earlier, then heading down to St Kilda for the Tri. I needed to pickup my race kit, T-Shirt, etc.  When I got to our teams tent I said g-day to Ollie Head Coach and asked for 5mins to chat before the race. He had a few things to do and asked for 15mins which I took to rack my bike and setup. When I got back to the tent Ollie and I sat down and had a chat about today’s race. I wanted to know how to race this one, what efforts to do, etc. I have raced over 7 OD’s but today's race was about Prep for Challenge Melbourne it was a full dress rehearsal  Ollie said to me, good you thinking about the Race A.  He basically said race it like I will be racing Challenge.  Think about your form, think about the process, think about the putting it together. It was what I was thinking and we chatted about my Prep and how the Pier to the Pub was. I thanked him for his insight.

After a bathroom run, it was that time, race time, on with the wetsuit grabbed my swim cap and goggles and headed down for a warm up swim. The water was not very clear and you could see the Southerly wind blowing. I line up in my wave start the horn sounded and off we went.

Out to the pier across the back in between boats, to the U turn and back again and into the beach. Followed by a little run into T1. Off with the wetsuit on with the Helmet and sunnies grabbed my bike and then headed out. After mounting my bike and getting my feet into the shoes and headed up towards the first turn. After the turn heading out for the first of three laps you could feel the head wind. I pushed through the wind and pain to the bottom of course, and the bottom you could feel the trail wind back. I was happy with this, little bit of recovery heading back to Transition. This was the same for the second and third laps. On the final lap coming up past Luna Park I started the dismount process getting my feet on top of the bikes shoes. As I came to the dismount line, I dismounted and run the bike into Transition. Re-racked the bike, removed my helmet on with my socks and runners.

Typically I don’t use socks for OD or less, but as this was dry run for the half just a few weeks away, It’s was important to get the process right. I grabbed my visor and headed out on the run. As I headed out on the path, Ollie was there he give me a high five on the way through. I felt good on the run, only walking through aid stations when needed. As I came around for the second lap I got some banta given to me from our squad members on the side lines. The average pace was not great, but not bad either. I felt good, that was the important thing. I remember come back to Transition on the second lap with the wind on my back, feeling good and strong thinking this is how Challenge Melbourne will feel.

I crossed the line in 2hrs 48 mins and 07 secs. 30sec PB at this distance, not bad for a training race

Great Australia Day Swim Race Report

For the last few years I have always done the Australia Swim. The TA crew where out in force, the day was ordinary weather wise. The bay had a nice little swell to it, and a rain front that lasted a 3 or so mins. After doing my rego and bumping into a work mate it got to that time to change into the wetsuit and go racing.

As I walked out on the pier you you could feel the wind from South West and swell was coming in from the same direction. I jumped in and did a bit of a warm up swim, it was not too long before my wave lined up. When the horn sounded it was on not just the swim but washing machine, bodies and people everywhere. Normally this last for a few hundred meters, but no it was all the way. After the 2 kick to my nose, lucky nothing broken. I dropped my pace a little to try and get some clear water, I was not going to be that lucky, I had to push and push hard over the top or around other people. Once we got past the breakwater and turned into the harbour the swell  dropped right away and the water was flat. I increased the stroke rate to find my way through the traffic but no luck. I got to the shore run up the over the line. At the end of the event I got catching with other TA members and 2 who where in the same wave as me commented on how violent our wave was. I wrote it off to experience before Challenge Melbourne.

My time was 25 mins and 49 secs.

Race Report - St Kilda Gatorade Race 5

Last weekend saw both Ellie and I race in the last Gatorade race of the 13/14 season. Ellie signed up for the mini and I signed up for the Sprint. Last race of the season is always big, lots of people, party time and yes, a race.

Saturday morning I did our squad’s pre race program, ride, run and swim, followed by putting up the TA Taj. Around lunch time Ellie and I headed back down to St Kilda for her to register and for us both to collect our kits, I felt racey after the morning’s session. On the way back to the car we walked through transition found our racks then spent the rest of the day went spent having lunch and a movie.

Saturday Morning Prep

Sunday morning at 4:30am the alarm up off, I got up had breakfast, shower and shaved, changed and then headed off to pickup Ellie and her gear and then we headed off to St Kilda, race day! We parked close by got our gear out of the car then headed over to the TA Taj where we found our Head Coach needing coffee and a sleep. You can see why in the photo below.

Ollie in need of Cofee

Ellie and I arranged our Transition gear then headed in transition. After I racked and got my transition area sorted I headed over to help Ellie out. She had most of her stuff right, except I offered a suggestion of racking her bike by the seat instead of the handle bars. She took my advice and swapped the bike around.

We headed back to the tent to chill out before Ellie’s race. Ellie changed into her wetsuit and we walked down to race start. About 2 mins before her wave start I sent her for a warm up swim. As she lined up for her wave start Dave from Supersprint did he’s standard yet me know if there are any loved one’s in the wave. I said Go Grubby, (her nick name) and Dave said “Go Grubby? you can’t call her that!” which I replied with you don’t live with her.

Ellie and TA Girls at the Swim Start

Ellie’s swim looked good but seemed to have issues getting out of her wetsuit as she headed into transition. I raced across the park to the road to catch her as she passed on the bike. Sadly I had to head back to my own race briefing I waited for her on the run but I had to head back to the tent to change.

Ellie heading for T1

Few of us walked down to the swim start got in and did our warm up swims before lining up. The horn sounded and off we went, I felt strong through the whole swim and applied Anna’s my swim coach swim techniques to the swim, the water was flat and fast. I came out of the water ran up the beach into transition, I got my wetsuit off grabbed my sunglass and helmet, unracked my bike and headed out, as I headed out to the ride the bike jumped loose from my hand but I caught it and kept going. Over the mount line and off we went.

Me at the swim start
Flying on the bike

I felt racey and fast and I was, I pushed hard and felt good. I passed lots of athletes and team mates. As I came back my the venue I heard the TA cheer squad (aka the Ironman Crew) yelling out. I dismounted with a little bit of kaos with a few people dismounting. I re-racked my bike and headed out on the run. I didn’t feel great I need a bathroom badly, I passed Julia and Pam found the bathroom did what was needed and kept on running.

TA Cheer Squad

Me on the run home

My run is still crap since breaking my toe. I reached the turn around and headed back to the finish, I could feel something rubbing I thought it was the timing belt so I stopped moved it and started to run again. As I came close to the finishing line the TA cheer squad was at its best; I ran as fast as I could over the line. As I walked a back to the tent feeling sore and happy I saw Ellie who run up and tried to talk me out telling me she had win her event. I was happy for her but I foot was hurting and I wanted to get my shoes off. I sat down took my shoe off and found that the back of my shoe had rubber the back of my foot and caused it to bleed a little. I waited in line for a post race massage and Karn did his best on my lower body. As people finished we all chatted about our races swapping stories when Ollie pulled out a big eskie of beer. Party time, photos were taken beer was drunk and then the podiums started. TA picked up our standard haul of medals and awards.

Portarlington Race Report

Two weekends ago I raced Portarlington, it’s one of the original Triathlon races in Victoria and a weekend away. Ellie and I headed down Friday night after week to the house that the team rented. On the way we stopped for dinner in Geelong before the last 30 or so km’s to Portarlington.  When we arrived at the house we found a few team mates there but half the house had gone to bed, so we quietly unpacked the car and went to bed ourselves. I woke around 6:30 go up had a shower followed by some breakfast. As others rose we chatted before we all started getting ready for the mornings Team warm-up. When we got down to the pier some other Team mates where there along with Coach Sarah all starting to setup the Tent, as per normal Ellie and I helped out. We did our normal warm up, ride out for 4k or so km’s and back again followed by some mounting and dismount practice on the hill. Followed by a little run, I kept the run short as I want to the keep the toe out of pain/over use.

Stretching after our run

After that we helped Supersprint out by setting up the racks, followed by an optional swim. The water was a little cold by shore but warmer out, a group of 10 so went in but only 8 of us made the call to swim right around the swim course, the other 2 swam back in. The water was choppy but swimmable, Geelong a few weeks earlier was way worse. After the swim I grabbed my race kit and all my gear and we headed back to the house to shower and change before heading out for an earlier lunch. After lunch we headed back to the house to chill out what some TV and do not much. It was not long before Ollie, our head coach arrived back from his long ride and prep for Ironman Melbourne. During the course of the afternoon a storm blew through and winds whipped up, Ollie was worried about the team tent and started to head back down to transition area, so I offered to go help out. We spent some time checking all the nuts and bolts and ensuring the tent walls where held down by transition rack bars. We headed back to the house and chilled out before dinner at the pub with a few team mates before hitting bed early, as we were getting up earlier we packed as much as we could into the car.

Crew Helping out Supersprint

Sunday morning I woke up around 2am with the sound of a toilet repeat flushing over and over and over, just as I was about to get up someone did and fixed the problem. Around 4:30am I got up for shower woke Ellie and headed out for some breakfast, Ollie was up shortly after as we all got ready. After packing the car, etc. Ellie and I headed down to the pier, Ellie had to be at the TriVic tent before 5:15 with transition opening at 5:30. I started to get our Team Tent setup with Chairs, etc. Ollie showed up and we got the walls on the back up and secured it was not too long before it was time to get my bike from the car and my transition bag and get my spot all sorted out.

The wind was blowing from the North West and after racking my bike my the seat and seeing it swaying I swapped the bike around to racked it by the handle bars. I setup my transition area then headed back to the team tent and chilled out before my race.  My race start was +10mins so around 25mins pre race start I got my wetsuit on and headed down to the swim start for a warm up swim, the water close to the shore was cold, but further out you went the warm it was. Back on shore the Supersprint staff took a photo of a few of us for their website.

Chilling out before the race

Ollie happy as

Supersprint TA Team Photo

I lined up with all my age groupers we waited for the horn and off we went, the swim was choppy but not as bad as Geelong was, I found the swim easy must be all the open water swim training in various conditions this year that paid off. As I came towards the land I felt the water change from warm to cold. With a few dolphin dives I hit the shore and run into transition. Tim another TA team mate was on the side lines yelling abuse at me. I got my wetsuit off, helmet on grabbed the bike and run out off transition. At the mount line Jess and Ellie where there to police us all. I stuffed up the mount but got going quickly up the hill and out on the bike course. I felt strong and good until the back end of the course when I hit the head winds. James another TA team mate racing in my age group and I played tag passing each other over and over. We headed back into town and down into transition as we came up to the dismount line there was Jess and Ellie as they said dismount before the line I said back not going to get me! I dismounted text book style and run back into transition re-racked my bike, on with my runners grabbed my visor and headed out up the sand steps. My run has not been great since I broke my toe mainly due to lack of training,  the pace has not been there, but the goal has been to finish these races. On the way out I felt great but at the turn around I hit head winds back I pushed on as hard as I could. On the way back I noticed a few runners with MP3/iPhone/iPod, etc nothing I could do about, etc keep on going. As I came down the hill and headed into the finishing chute and over the line.

Getting the job done

At the Finish Line

My Final time was 2hr even

I grabbed some fluids and headed over to the Technical Officials to report the few runners out on the course. Ellie and Jess got assigned to talk to them as they came towards the finish line. As for me I headed back to the tent waited in line for a post race massage then changed into some warmer clothes. As I changed I found someone had been to the shop got me a Poweraid and Danish, such a good Girl Friend I have! When Ellie was done with her duties of being a TO (Tech Official)  we grabbed our bags, my bike, etc from transition packed the car and headed back to the house for a quick shower before heading home.

After we got home unpacked, etc. we headed out to see a local artist play by the name of Jenny Biddle. One long weekend with happy memories.

Geelong Race Report

Geelong was going to my second Olympic Distance Tri, the first being Noosa in 2012. My race program this season was very different to last year. I didn’t do the full race series, I trained and complete just one Tri (Elwood) prior to Geelong. Thursday before the race I did my final run with Coach Emma who was pleased with my progress. She commented that if keep this up next season I’ll be fast as, great to hear few days out from the race.  Thursday night saw me complete the last combo session with TA at Elwood. Was a great session, no running, no grind session just tick the legs over on the bike. After the bike came the swim I put my wettie on and pulled the zip up, then the zip came out the top of the wetsuit. Not part of the plan, lucky for me I had a spare wetsuit.

I had arranged to take Friday and Monday off to making it a 4 day weekend, I headed off to 2xu in Hampton to drop the wettie off for repair. I saw my mate Rees, he asked when was my next race, which I replied Sunday, and I said I had a technical issue with the wettie. He commented that the suit would not be fixed in time, which I knew anyway. I left the wettie with him and then packed all the Tri crap up and picked Ellie along with all her crap and head off to Geelong, 2 TT Bikes, boot full of crap, 2 tubs of Tri Clothing and bike spares plus clothes, etc…. Car was full and we head off Geelong for 4 days of Triathlon.

The weather for the weekend was going to be prefect, not too hot on Sunday and when we arrived in Geelong the below pic is what we saw, perfect. We had some lunch then checked out the run/bike turn around and then checked into the Apartment which was just 1km from the finish line. Friday night saw us catch up with Steve (another TA triathlete in Geelong for the weekend) for dinner. Followed by a somewhat earlier night.

Friday in Geelong
Saturday morning saw the standard TA program, a ride, run and swim. We meet at the TA Taj and went for a ride with the coaches out along the Point Henry Road and then back to the TA Taj and little run followed by a slash, nothing too serious. After the session we headed back to the apartment, quick shower for me and out the door as Ellie had signed up for the 1km open water swim.  This was her 3rd  open water swim but good experience. After her race I collected my race kit for the Tri and we got some lunch and then back to the Apartment to prep my bike for the race. Ellie had also offered her services as lead bike for the 10km run, she had to be down at the transition area at 3pm for briefing and run through the course, at the same time I drop off the bike. One of the nice things you can pick your own racking spot with in your age ground and this I did. The final rack in the of the TA Taj. As they say, position, position, position.  After racking the bike then headed off to the race briefing along with registering with Subaru for a free race belt we headed to Coles for some shopping then back to the apartment. We chilled out for bit and then walked down got some pasta for dinner and earlier night.

Saturday morning pre race session

1Km Open Water Swim Start

Position, Postion, Position.
Alarm went off Sunday morning – race day, breakfast, shower, etc. standard race day prep. Then a walk to transition and setup the bike for the race. I drop the air in the tyres over night, so re-pumped up the tyres, put the spares, water and the feed bag on, laid out my transition area then headed off to the team tent. The long course guys headed off for their start before too long it was time to put on the wettie and head off for a warm up swim.

In our race there was only going to be 3 waves. These would be big groups so the swim will be a be rough but that’s ok arms out. My warm up swim was good I felt ready. We lined up the horn sounded off we went, the water was a little dirty but flat. As soon as I could find clear water I pushed hard, I came out of the swim feeling good. I ran into transition, off with the wettie on helmet grabbed the bike and headed out. I jumped on and way we went. I got into my bike shoes well before the turn and headed up the hill. Geelong is a very technical course from a bike and run point of view. Once I got through the park and out on the Portarlington road I got into the air position and pushed. With the road being opened it subject to winds, in this case the wind was blowing from the South which had it a side winds. Never much fun with a TT bike and Aero Wheels these act like a sail and subject to being pushed to the side.

Finish Line
Kept on telling myself control what you can control and don’t worry about the rest. I came back into the park through town and up to the turn around and back towards the transition. I re-racked my bike off with helmet, on with the shoes and out for a run. Again the run was through the park area. The first km hurt, I needed to pee badly at the first had station was a public toilet I run in to the toilet pee’d, there we a few other triathlete’s doing the same as well. Back out on the run course up and around through the park and then back down towards the transition, past the finish line along the shore line up to the turn around and back down the hill to the finish line. Around the 8km mark I felt the blister that got me in Noosa start up again, but not as bad. I pushed on to the finish line. I reached the finish line saw Ellie on the way through and looked at my time. I had just taken 10mins off my second Olympic Distance event. 10 MINS! OMG! This was huge. I headed into the athlete’s finishing area. I caught up with a few other TA gals and guys who had finished. Lots of high 5’s and congrats.

I headed back to the TA Taj, and saw coaches Sarah and Oillie. Oillie was happy with the effort and time taken off, he pointed out that Geelong is technical and hilly where Noosa is flat. So good effort and Noosa  this year should be quicker again. Once Coach Emma was back we had a chat and time to work on the run. I agree with her my run does need some work. Over all I happy with my time and effort for my second Olympic  Distance. I spent some time in the tent have chat with other Athletes and catching up on race stories.

After grabbing my stuff and shower we headed out for a feed and beer and watch the ITU race which was full on but fun to watch. I crashed early that night and had a sleep in the following morning. After breakie and shower we went for a walk. My body felt pretty good, but was not too long before we had to pack all the crap back into the car another race weekend over but well worth the effort.
