Xosize Race Report

With my main races (Noosa and Geelong) over it was time to have a little fun, I wanted to do another Tri before the season was over. My first choice was Portarlington but the cost of another weekend away wasn’t in my budget, so I picked the Xosize at Sandringham.

I picked up my race kit yesterday and walked into transition but they had not finished labeling the racks but you could work out that Row 6 is where I should be.

Race day very different to my last 2 races. Previous you had rack your back the day before not this time it was case of lining up,  get my arm numbered then heading into transition. It was a little crazy people everywhere, as I racked my bike I noticed that the rack height was lower than my seat. This meant that I would have to tip my bike to one side to get it out of transition. OK not much I can do about that just deal with it. I setup my transition area and headed out and catch up with Jo Jo and we headed down to the  beach to see what the water was like. Sometime Sandy can be nice and sometimes bad today was flat as.
Ahhh Sandy Flat and fast

Jo Jo and I before race start

We watched the mini race swim start and exits but before too long it was time to change into our wettie’s and get ready to race. I got in the water and did my warm up swim and the water felt nice and warm almost a non-wettie swim. I lined up with everyone else the horn sounded and off we went. The first 80meters or so was the washing machine style start people on people. I tried to find clear water but could not I had to swim over the top of people to find clear water. I pushed on at the first can I finally found clear water and pushed hard to the second can. I could see the swim finish and I push hard to the shore, then followed by the nice little 800m run into transition, to be honest Sandringham should be renamed Swim, Run, Bike, Run. The run for the mini and sprint guys is always longer than the swim it’s self.

Coming out from the swim

Once in transition I got off my wetsuit, on with the helmet and sunglasses grabbed my bike and ran out of transition, one I hit beach road I could not see the mount line and yelled out to a marshal where is the mount line another marshal started to wave his hand on where the line was. I ran over the line hopped on my bike and headed off. I found the course fast and not much wind around. On my second lap I passed another Tri Alliance member,  Sarah,  as I passed I said to her, come here often and she replied keep going. As I headed back to transition approx 500m away from the dismount line I got my feet out of the shoes and rode with them on top. I did the ye-old step off the bike and ran back into transition, re-racked my bike, and put on socks and my runners. Normally I don’t use socks but as they were brand new shoes I felt this was the best way. My legs felt really heavy and sore. My right quad was feeling it and the run was going to hurt. At approx the 2km I had to stop stretch out the quad before continuing. Shortly after Kate, a friend from Couple on the Run run’s group, passed and said hi. At the turn around I grabbed some water to cool me off as well as getting some fluids on board. On the run back to the finish line  my quad felt a long better. I crossed line loads and caught up with Ellie, who came along to support me and the TA Crew who were racing, Kate and others we call compared races stories.

My Time was 1hr 27m and 08s. At first I thought not my best time, but when compared it to my previous race at Sandy I had sliced off over 4mins.

Another successfully race to a great racing session.

Heading out on the run

My First Triathlon

A few days ago a friend of mine (Shannon Roberts) placed a tweet up on Twitter . “Competing in a running & triathlon event is both terrifying and exhilarating. And therefore, addictive. #run #triathlon” which I replied with “I remember finishing my first tri. Totally exhausted on the grass and 5 mins later wanting to do it all again right now”, she retweeted the comment.

I spent the day thinking about my life as a Tri-athlete/athlete and how I got here. Story goes back to 2009. The company I work for put on a in-house training program for staff on Time Management the instructor was an American lady a cross between Dolly Parton and Lucy Ball. She was a very funny lady and got us all thinking not only about Time Management in the work place but in my private life’s too. She said you need to set a goal and aim for that set a timeline and stick to it.

My story goes back earlier than that, my back had been playing up for some time. I could not stand up for more than 5 minutes without massive lower back pain. One of the girls I work with put me onto an Osteo and after she started to correct my back she suggest I lose some weight and build my core. With a gym only 50m away from work I joined the gym, got a personal trainer or three, stopped drinking over 2 liters of coke a day and eating crappy fatty food. For the record I didn’t stop day one I changed my habits over the course of 3-6 months. I got fit, I ran, did weights, swam, spin class and I lost some 15+ kg of weight. My back felt better and I saw the changes for the better my only regret is that I didn’t start this process earlier on in life.

After the Time Management training day I started to think about Triathlons. I’d seen a few on tv so what better to do is to go see one up close and personal. Xosize had a race on a Brighton so I went along on race day and watched and took notes on the whole event, I loved the idea of the challenge. So I started to train for a Triathlon, I ran, swam and did more spin class didn’t have a bike yet and had not rode in years. So I got myself a Mountain Bike and started to ride the tracks around home, found out how to change the tyres from mountain bike tyres to road tyres, ok hybrid tyres. Next on my list was a Trisuit and Wetsuit started to swim in the bay, all this would do for the my first Triathlon.

I felt ready so I signed up for my first Tri  the Xoszie race at Sandringham I remember it well. I went down on the Saturday collected my race kit, walked through the transition area made sure I felt ok. Xosize put on a training session at Brighton Baths which I went too for some open water swim training, I remember it was hot as we all could feel the heat in our wetsuits and couldn’t wait to hit the water.

The following day was race day. I race and I ran that 800m run from the beach up the hill to transition, may be Sandringham was not the best race to start doing Tri’s with. I rode, I ran. I completed my first Tri! I remember getting over the line sitting on the grass and my girl friend at the time said “You did! And how did I feel?” I replied “stuffed”, but after 5mins I want to go again, right now! no waiting, no delay I wanted to race again.

I was addicted to this new thing called Triathlons!  After completing my first Tri I got a road bike and completed the last race of the session better than the previous race. The following session I signed up for 5 races Xosize races and then 3 with Active Feet. I had a mixed session mainly my open water swims were not great but still loved the sport getting better and learning new skills all the time.

The last year I started to get serious about my training and joined Tri Alliance, with Tri Alliance I’ve completed a full season of Sprint Tri’s, signed up for Noosa and complete a Level 1 Triathlon Coach course.

Running Event, Road Race or Triathlon are all a race against the clock for the individual it’s exhilarating and addictive sports, like a drug and once you hooked it’s not something you can let go. To anyone who is reading this blog and is not a part of a Tri Club, Run Group or some group fitness find one join in. All I can say is I have meet some really good people who are keen to share your goals and help you reach them

Just want to thank Sharon for tweet  and getting me thinking back over the last few years.

Tri Season in review/grade card

  •  Swim - B ~ While my pool swimming is good my open water swimming has been poor. Part of the problem was how bad Port Phillip bay has been over summer. It been the worse I have seen for many years. Hence my open water swim training has suffered and it shows in my Tri’s. This is still without a doubt my weakest event, but I am already a better swimmer now than I was at the end of last season, so I am happy with that and I will work on to improve for next season. However this being said and done I loved the swim down at Mt Martha on Australia Day.

  • Bike – A ~ I haven't missed a workout outside any weekend except for when it was really wet, then I did a spin class instead. It shows in the results I’m quick and strong. From time to time I realize I have backed off and not riding hard as I could. Bit more focus on this instead of checking out the views around while riding. Time for some Tri bars too.

  • Run - B- ~ Like with the bike, I haven't missed a workout. That is really good and I am happy with that, considering where I was in September last year. At the end of Tri season I’m getting off the bike either not hurt or hurting and managing to put in runs without stopping or need fluids. It’s shaping up to be a great run season over winter. Already have a few races lined up.

  • Social/Family/Balance - C ~ I think this is really important because the pull of family and friends often is in conflict with training. To my family and friends I’m sorry. Long days and training does take a toll on me but it’s really rewarding when I cross that line. I will take the time to smell the roses and spend more time with you over the winter months.

  • Rest/Recovery - A- ~ I am a pretty good at taking days off as part of my schedule. A problem I have is that work often forces me to have a very non-restful day. It seems that I am on call 24/7 to work and family for this I do need to change to have a little more me time. Yes I know it’s selfish.

  • Favorite Race - They are all fun but it would have to be St Kilda and Elwood (Elwood I have had a love hate relationship with. I have had good races and bad races there.

  • Hated Race – Elwood and Sandringham, Elwood I was a coupld ov poor swims one with the water so bad you could not see past your hand. Sandringham, that bloody run from the beach to the transition area.

Someone has suggested Adventure Racing, starting to look into this. Might just give it a go.

XoSize Race 5 Race Report - Final Tri for the Season

The final race of the season of Xosize/Start to Finish was my final race for the season.

Yesterday and was blowing around 25km/35km from the South-west and during my race collection / checking out the transition area the bay did not look like fun.

This morning the wind had dropped right away I found my spot and set my gear ready to race. Then the mad dash to the toilet before the queues got too long. I headed down the beach, with a race start of 7:30am + 8mins for my group so I tested the waters and it felt cold.

The horn sounded and off we went. I let the pack go and waded my way in and started towards the back of the pack. The problem about starting at the back of the pack is you run over the top of everyone. I got around the 2 buoys and headed towards the beach. Once I hit the beach the run to transition got to my bike wetsuit off, socks, shoes on, helmet and sunglasses on grabbed my bike and off out to the road.

Got to the mount line got on and road towards Dendy St . Around at the cones and back down towards transition then along Beach Rd towards Black Rock. Turned around then headed back towards Green Point. I ran back in re-racked my bike off with the bikes shoes on with the runners grabbed my visor and off I ran.

The legs felt ok the run felt slow and it showed.

Overall I finished the race the last one for the season it was not my best race but I have been battling a head cold off/on for the last few weeks.

So this completed the month of Tri’s and my first full season of Triathlons now I move to running events from here on in.

Active Feet Tri Race 6 (St Kilda) Report

The final race of the season (Active Feet Tri's) was going to be huge and it was. I knew it was going big when I first saw the site. When you see some 39 bike racks you know there are going be a lot of people in the events. I heard that 900 plus people did the Active feet race this morning and another 1500 for the Gatorade Tri.

It had rained a little around 5am a quick heavy shower which had just made everything a little wet, but not too bad like Sandringham was a few weeks ago.

Found my bike spot and set my gear ready to race. Then the mad dash to the toilet before the queues got too big. I made a quick re-check of my gear and off to drop my bag off. One thing about St Kilda the compound so big and it takes some time to get around the whole site.

After dropping my bag off I headed down the beach, with a race start of 7:30am + 20mins for my group there was a bit of time to kill. The water felt cool but not cold, the more you went in the warmer it got.

The horn sounded and off we went. I let the pack go and waded my way in and started towards the back of the pack. This helps with my swim anxiety but the problem about starting at the back of the pack is you run over the top of everyone. I Got around the 2 buoys and headed towards the beach. Once I hit the beach the run to transition is about the same length as Sandringham without the hill of Jetty Rd, remember I did say the transition area was huge. Got to my bike wetsuit off, socks, shoes on, helmet and sunglasses on grabbed my bike and off out to the road. The swim showed the fact I didn’t do any swim practice during the week. Why? I had a head cold at the start of the week and work was crazy at the backend of the week. Ah well such is life.

Got to the mount line got on and road like hell towards Kerford Road. Around at the lights and back down towards transition then along Beaconsfield Parade to Point Ormond Avenue. At the turn off to Point Ormond Avenue some riders turned to early and had to come back to complete the course. One guy nearly took me out but all pushed on made the turn around then back up Beaconsfield Parade to transition area. I ran back in re-racked my bike off with the bikes shoes on with the runners grabbed my visor and off I ran.

The legs felt heavy, sore with a 3km plus 250m out of transition, I sucked it up and pushed on the run felt slow but looking at the data from my watch afterwards it was at 11km pace with a life to 12.5km at the end. What felt bad turned out to be good. Looking forward to a strong run session ahead.

Just want to say I think that Super Sprint does a great job. I have enjoyed 3 races of theirs this season and will look at doing more next season.

So what’s next – well the month Tri’s is 3/4 done. One more race – Xosize Race 5 at Brighton next Sunday. Again this race I love.

Wet day at the office. Xosize Race 4 Race Report

After a perfect day Saturday the cloud rolled in along with some showers late in the day. The weather forecast called for a Shower or two clearing for Sunday. All I will say is it started to rain, not heavy rain but the stuff that kind of makes you feel like yuk! From 4am Sunday morning it started to rain off then on.

When I arrived at the transition area it was wet and dark. I setup my stuff in transition lucky for me I took a garbage bag to over my bike and running shoes to ensure they didn’t get wet. Dropped off my bag at the clothing drop off and headed down to the beach. Mistake #1 – I wore my sleeveless wetsuit, with a +18min start the rain and a little gentle breeze it got cold. At approx 7:18am the horn sounded and off we went, it was the typical pack start – Koas, but it claimed down and we all got on with it.

If you know Sandringham at all there is a good 500m plus run from the beach to the transition area, the run up felt good but managed to get pretty puffed out by the time I hit the transition area. (Happened last year too) Luck for me My bike was right at the end of rack so no loosing where I left my bike, however when I got to my bike I found it knocked over and my helmet and sunglasses on the grass instead of the handle bars where I left them. As I was putting on my socks and bike shoes I had issues getting my left sock on as it ripped Mistake #2 - I made the call to ditch the left sock. The right sock and shoe was on and I just had about enough of this and wanted to get out on the road. As I headed out on the road it was wet and spray was not a lot of fun. After a while I ended up putting my sunglasses in my Trisuit’s pocket and kept on going Mistake #3. I made good ground and time on the bike but taking special care not to slip over on the turns or crash out.

When I got back into Transition again I put my bike back but the bike next to me was way over blocking my gear. I had to fix up that bike plus rack my own and get my shoes off and ditching on other sock (from my right foot). I grab my run visor and headed out. Passing people and feeling strong usually my legs feel like crap after I get off the bike but not this time, they felt great not heavy or sore. I only have one comment re the run leg. After the turn around and heading back to the finish line when we hit the Hampton Life Saving Club there was choice of paths to follow some people went the wrong way. There should have been a marshal there but there was not. Made it back to the finish line in what felt like a good time only to see that it wasn’t bad but not great.

According to the BOM it’s been the wettest Summer for some time.

Here are the times

First of the Month Tri’s completed. Next week is the other course that I have had a love / hate relationship with. Elwood. with the Active Feet Tri. The last 2 times I have raced there the water has been dirty and choppy. At this stage the forecast is saying a shower or two for Saturday so here is hoping that it’s dry race Sunday.

Pictures to follow as soon as I have them

Taking it to the next level

Recently (ok December) I felt everything was coming together I feel strong, positive, committed and I have direction.

Today as I write this I am pain free after runs or bike sessions. I love the pool and put in 4.8km min per week. Open Water ok I'm a little behind on that. Here in Melbourne the bay is dirty, very dirty. It rains and then the bay is dirty. It's not safe for swimming. Lot's of metro Tri's and Open Water Swims have either been cancelled or postponed. It will be interesting to see this weekend's tri if the swim is on or off.

With 4 Melbourne Metro Tri's left I have somehow signed up for all 4. Wish me luck I'm really looking forward to it.

After March I switch to running events. Might even do a Duathlon or two.

XOSize Race 3 Race Report

New Year first race of 2011. This week in Melbourne we have had a lot of rain and during my walk through yesterday of the course the bay looked dirty and I really thought the swim would be canceled today.

Nope it was on! So I went out to the first Can and you could not see a thing but the water was clean (ie. Tasted ok). My Age Group was first up and off we went my swimming is improving but not quickly as I would like. Once I got back to transition got on my bike and the ride was very strong and very fast I think I passed some 20 people out on the road. Once back in on with the runners and out again for a 2km run. I got say the 3 blokes who had a really big night last night and were still going this morning you guys should try a Tri and see how your bodies feel. The amount of crap they give us (mainly the girls) was unbelievable. We got it both ways running out and on the way back in.

I didn’t look at the time after I finished, but the times sent to me put a smile on my dial. 41m 51s a PB!!!

Wahhhoooo

2010 in Review

Well with a few hours left of 2010 it’s time to reflect on the year gone.

So what did I achieve in 2010

- Turned 40 years old don’t feel 40
- Run a PB in 10km race – took 3 mins off
- Every Tri I have done I have improved my time. (Based on the same distance)
- Completed 2 Tri’s in February / March and went on to sign up for some more
- Broke in a new Personal Trainer (Alana)
- Spent way too much on sporting gear
- Injured myself and spent 12 weeks playing Rehab – Thanks to Ben at Recover Sports Med

So what is the plan for 2011

- Finish off the Xosize Tri 10/11 races (3 to go)
- Complete Races 5 & 6 Active Feet Tri’s
- Complete Mother’s Day Run, Run Melbourne, Go the Tan and Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the Lake
- Try and complete Defence Lake Attack (Tried the last 2 years might be 3rd time lucky.
- Build my running back up from 5km to 10km.
- Spent time with John Van Wisse to improve my Open Water Swimming
- Maybe an open water swim or two.

What else in 2011? Who knows but it’s only a few hours away.

Happy New Year everyone

These are the Active Feet Tri's Race 5 & 6 and then Xosize Race 5 week after Active Feet Race 6

Race Schedule for March 2011 reads

Active Feet Fun Tri Elwood (6th)
Active Feet Fun Tri St.Kilda (20th)

Xosize Race 2 Race Report

Woke up a little before 4:30am this morning looked out the window, no windy not a cloud in the sky – great day for a tri. By the time I had something to eat to claim any nervous feelings, showered and got ready to go a early morning cloud/fog had set in.

When I got to the transition area got numbered and headed into transaction area and got setup. One thing I noticed the was very wet, as usual the atmosphere was light headed, relaxed and good nature. I went down to the swim start and jumped in and headed out for bit of a swim. The water was warm (water temp was around 19.6c mark) a little murky and fairly flat. Was very happy with swim practice had a chat with a few people doing practice swims and generally relaxed feeling.

During the race briefing we all heard that there we a few fins noticed out on the bay but we were told they we dolphins not sharks and that the race director had sent a boat out to check.

At 7:15am the horn sound and off we went. This time my swim was good and honest but being stuck in the middle of slower swimmers which is never fun. During the middle of the course you either hit your hand on sand or rocks at the bottom, yes the swim course was not in deep water, in places you could stand up and walk if you wanted too. (Quicker swimming) After getting out of the water I headed to T1 which was approx 500m run, got to my bike, off with the wet suit on with socks and bike shoes, grab the helmet and sunny glasses and then the bike and head out. Just as I started to mount another competitor cut me off and nearly caused me to crash as he did crash, lucky for me I didn’t crash.

We were warned during the race briefing that the turn around’s were tight but I found then to be ok. During the bike leg I saw no less than 3 people riding in wetsuits which I thought was a bit funny at the time but more on that later. Once I got back to T2 off with the bike shoes on with runners and out I went again. My legs felt very heavy and I want to give up and walk but I pushed on. At the turn around I grab some water and pushed on the run felt bad and slow but I finished in 35m04s.

After the event I was hanging around the finish shute and I run into 2 of the guys that had wetsuits during the bike leg. I spoke with both of them. 1 had forgot this running shorts and decided to do the event in a wetsuit and 2 was told no shirt no bike or run. Both of them looked stuffed 1 said as he was running he pulled the top of his wetsuit open and he could feel the heat rise up. Good on both of them for doing the event in a full wettie but you will NOT get me doing that.

After the event finished I was wondering through the event marquees and I run into Terry O'Halloran the Owner of Start to FinishRunners World,  and Running Fit. We had a good chat about Running Fit, Run Melbourne, Spring into Shape Race 3, Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the Lake, Sandy Half Point, Olympic Dream and where I came from into running and Triathlon’s Terry is a very down to earth comedian and all around nice bloke.

For the Record Olympic Dream was canceled due to lack of numbers. It requires a minimum of 3000 competitors for both City Link and City of Melbourne to close roads, etc. In addition last year not on Olympian competed in last year’s events, Terry said that the event will be replaced with a different type of event next year with a course that will be very similar to last year’s Olympic Dream. Can wait to see

Here are the times
Overall time 35:04.30

Swim 05:31.50 (took 50secs off)
T1 02:02.60 (took some 36secs off)

T2 1.25.80 (took 1 whole min off)
Run 10:27 (90 secs off)

Very happy over all. Photo’s to follow soon.

With just under 6 days from the last race (Tri) for me of the year. With some 32 days left of year I started thinking about next year. So far I have 3 Xosize Tri Races left and looking at the calendar for the first few months of 2011 the following events I will be doing

With Xmas and New Year fast approaching I’m sure there will be lots of food & drink but it’s a good time to relax and regroup from a long year of work, fun, events and injury.

There are some people that need to be thanked for their work over the last 12 months who helped me achieve some long distances, new events and a few PB's and recover from injury along the way.

Week 12 of Rehab - Last on the Rehab posting.

No Physio today, and nothing in the for a long time (fingers crossed)  but a good solid 4km run today and it felt good. Time to start added km's. 4.5km next outing.

Got to get some swimming in this week too with some 12 days away until the next Tri I want, I need to feel stronger in the water than I did last time.

So it's time to practice, practice, practice and then some more practice.

XOSize Race 1 Race Report

This morning I did the first of the Xosize 10/11 Series

When I woke up this morning I could hear the windy outside and I thought I hope the bay would not be too rough. Lucky for me it was not.

We headed down to the course around 6am and got numbered and heading into the Transition area. After getting setup, etc. headed down to the swim start and put in a quick swim to test the waters per say.

At 7:15am the horn sound and off we went. I must say the swim was poor, not my best effort, but after not spending much time in the pool showed in my performance in the bay this morning. After hitting transition and loosing place of my of bike I got my act together and headed out on the bike. Passed heaps of bike which is good thing shows that I am strong on the bike. Heading down to Sandringham was quick mainly due to the north wind this morning, but was a little hard work on the return trip back. Hit transition again swapped the bike for runners and headed out on the run. The run felt ok not fast but ok. Got home in 46m 56s. The goal was to do sub 47min. Goal reached.

Preparations

Here it is, the day before my first full seasons of Tri’s. Am I ready? Ready as I will be. Shortly I’m heading up to transition area to pickup my race kit and do a little walk through the transition area and then it’s time to get my gear bag all sorted ready for the big day.

My Race starts tomorrow @ 7am +12mins for my wave and I am aiming for a sub 47min finish.

So by this time tomorrow the tri will be done and dusted.

Standby for the my race report.
