Mission Accomplished Challenge Melbourne Race Report

Challenge has been 12 months in the making. Standing around either watching or being a Technical Official with a broken toe I needed a long term goal. Challenge Melbourne was it, I registered and typically forgot about. After running Run Melbourne  and having some 4-5 weeks away from sports with cold and running a Half Marathon with it, maybe not the best idea. I then suffered some Professional and Personal Challenges. These took a total on my training and racing but I still went on. I raced Sri Chinmoy and went to do Sandy Half and fell sick the Thursday before the race. So I signed up for my 4th Half the Mornington Half Marathon. While my race times where not great these were great build races. Something was not right, I loved the sports, but I couldn’t be stuffed.

After seeing a post on Facebook from a good Friend, Helen, I sent her an email and Helen followed it up phone call. We had a few long chats and got my mind and direction sorted. During this time our Club put a link about Sport and the Mental awareness hosted by Lakeside Sports Medicine. I went a long and it gave me a bit direction  and backed up what Helen and I worked on.

I was very disconnected from the squad doing my own thing. I would cross paths with some members of the squad, but I busy being a quite achiever and feeling good about me doing my thing.

I went down to Hazelwood and did the Sprint I got 3rd in my Age Group, I went to Noosa took 6mins 30secs off last year. Things were looking good, after Noosa start the build for Challenge the work load is high, very high. I showed up for my first Long Course (LC) ride, one of the coaches said, short course is at Elwood today this is Long Course. My response yeap know that. A Team, Dave said to me, “Simon have you grown a set of balls”. Yes was my response and this draw a few comments of good stuff, etc.

I signed up for a few open water swims, and then there was Hell Week. I kept pace with the fast crew, but got dropped. My run speed finally came back, my swim was quick. I was feeling very happy with myself after racing Gatorade Tri in January I knew everything was on track.

Shit got real when the race pack arrived in the Post, but I was in taper town. Saturday morning before the event it was a little windy the group did a ride to Black Rock and back followed by a little run and ice the legs. I went home changed and came back to collect my Cap and T-Shirt and walk through transition to find my home.

Transition

My Rack Space

Saturday afternoon after preparing the bike I stayed at home, drank heaps of water and rested. I started to think should I swap my front race wheel for the factory wheel. I didn’t sleep much Saturday night, I woke up around 4am and checked out the iPad and before getting up and getting ready. When I got to the venue it was busy and windy. Normally I rack my bike by the seat, not today the wind was blowing bikes around everywhere. I setup my area and went to the team tent. I could feel the pre race nerves and I went for a walk to the Public Toilets, I knew the queues would be smaller than the Potaloos. I could see the bay was a washing machine the swim was not going to be easy. I went back to the team tent got started to get ready.

Race Bike Ready to Race
When I got down to the swim start I went into the bay to test the conditions. It would be tough going out, on the 2 outward legs of the M shaped course, but the push back to the beach would be good. When I got out to listen to the race briefing the wind was not cold. Few teams came down to wish us luck.

When called up I made my way into the starters gate. The horn sounded and off we went, the waves where full on it seem to take forever to reach the first turning buoy and then coming in was very fast. I was passing other people in the waves who were not coping well in the swell. After coming back in I head to head out for the 2nd half of the swim. Out at the deep water turning buoys I could feel it raining on back of my head. On well I’m in the water anyway was my thought. After turning and heading into the beach I used the waves as a bit of rest bite. I came out of the swim feeling beaten up, but relaxed, I run into transition got my wettie off and placed it over my shoes to keep the water out. I know it sounds strange a wet wetsuit over your shoes to keep it dry, but the wetsuit is inside out and it will keep them dryer if it rains. After the event we heard that Elwood Life Saving Club rescued some 68 or 92 from the water (reports differ on the number) and there were some 40+ who elected not swim, but had to wait for last person in the wave before they continued on.

Swim Start

After getting my helmet and sunglasses on I grabbed my bike and ran out to the mount line. I got on my bike peddled a bit and then sorted out my feet and shoes. I used the first half lap to work out where the wind was blowing and where I could push, where to be in aero and where not. About half way through the first 15kms the rain started. On my way back from Mordy was the quickest 15km segment over all. After the first 30kms it was sub 1hr. I thought to myself I can’t keep this pace up for the rest of the bike leg. After the 2nd Lap I was sub 2 hours. The rain clear up and on my final 15km back from Mordy the sun came out. I was busting for a pee and stopped at a toilet. When I went to get back on my bike I couldn’t click in correctly. My cleats was full of mud. I had to stop and stamp my foot down a few times to clear the mud. I got going again I was clipped in correctly and I pushed home. I dismount and ran my bike back into Transition, rack it and took my helmet off. Took the wetsuit off my shoes on with socks and shoes and headed out.

At the turn around in the wet

21km to go, I felt pretty good, but didn’t want to overdo it.  I need to pee again and at the first aid station was Hampton Life Saving Club with Public Toilets but both where in use and there was queue. I kept on going, as we moved from the beach to the tee tree a few male competitors where in the bush peeing. I joined them, problem solved. We headed along the beach path and down to the bottom of Jetty Road  and a little loop before heading back up Jetty Road to the bike path. Them some 2.5km back to finish area before doing another loop. The second loop was uneventful, but I could feel my felt hamstring and glute tightening up. On the final lap around 2km from home coach Greg passed me and asked what lap I was on. When I said 3 he said hang on my tail and don’t drop off. About 500m in Greg said  looks like we might collect another 2. As we passed Mark and Rowdy Greg said hang on! They did, Greg said right here is the last aid station we will stop quickly grab a drink and run home. I did what I was told, but Mark and Rowdy dropped off. Greg kept me going until about 500m when he said he was going to bolt home keep going and sprint up the little hill and into the finish line. I tried, but I didn’t have much left.  I crossed the line, stopped the Garmin, got my finishers medal and towel. I took off my race time belt and handed it in. Greg was there I shook his hand and thanked him. We waited for Rowdy and Mark and then headed into the finishing area for some food and fluids.

On the run, getting hit with the surf on the breakwater

At the finish line

Took me a little time to process what I just had done. My First Half Ironman Distance, something I thought I would never do in my life. I went back to the team tent feel pretty good, I bumped into Ollie who ask how I went and I told him I got the job done.  There was a fair crew in the team tent and we got chatting, Roofie made the comment it’s the only race he was done with a 86.6% chance of drowning on the Swim, Bike or the run.  He was right but still I got it done.

There was so many people who I know from the Club and from Triathlon in general  not only where the conditions bad for those that race, but for those supporting. I thank you all for your support not only on the journey but on the course as well.

Teamup Race 5 Race Report

With the Tri Race Season at end and my race season a wreck after breaking my toe I looked at what I could do. With recently completing the final sprint race of the season and an Olympic Distance Tri being the final race in Melbourne I thought ok, I missed St Kilda’s OD, let’s do this one. I called the coaches to see if I could get a discount code and luck for me they managed to arrange a free race entry, score! Friday before the race our office was moving offices. So I worked both Friday and Saturday to help move our office, lots of manual work. During the Saturday afternoon I headed down to Mordy and collected both my race kit and Ellie’s. Ellie was completing the Sprint distance after coming first in the mini in the previous race. After finishing work Ellie and I headed out for a pasta dinner and I gave her race kit to her.

Sunday morning I picked up Ellie and we headed down to Mordy. After parking and grabbing our gear we headed down to the transition area and headed in to rack our bikes. After setting up my bike and gear I headed over to see how Ellie was going. After we finished our setups we headed over to the team tent to drop off our transition bags. Needed a bathroom before the race I headed over to the public toilets and waited in line while Ellie went for a coffee. However only 500m away was another public toilet. I was hoping no-one knew about this one and lucky for me it was not in use. After a quick use of the facilities I headed back to the tent and started to change into my wetsuit and headed down to the beach. I bumped into Jess from Casey Tri Club, Jess just completed or tried to finish IM Melbourne but after a crash on the bike she didn’t complete the run. She wished me good luck and I headed down for a warm up swim, the water was chilly but not cold, I did my warm up swim and lined up with the rest in my age group.

Swim Start Warm up - how clear is the water

Race Time!
The horn sounded and off we went the bay was flat and the swim felt fast and I felt strong. Anna, my swim coach, prep’d me well I followed her plan for my swim and felt great at the end of the 1500m. The water was flat and clear, you could see the bottom most of the way along with a few jellyfish. I ran up the beach into transition got my wetsuit off, aero helmet on and I grabbed my bike. As I headed out and started to ride up towards Sandringham I started to think I’ll be doing 2/3 of the Challenge MelbourneBike course twice. In my mind it set in I need to learn every bump, crack, etc before the race next February. I felt fast and strong on the bike as I approached Royal Ave and turn around I saw my target another rider in front. After the turn back into aero and I pushed hard, I passed the rider as we hit Black Rock and powered up the hill towards Ricketts Point. These rolling hills I know and I have hated and loved them, today was love.

Bike Turn Around - Photo by CCTS Tri Club

At Mentone It’s a clear almost straight piece of road towards Mordy. Just short of transition you could see the turn point, as I approached I could hear people calling out my name. I had to be careful to stay right on the turn as other athletes who started in later waves / races where coming through on the left. I got back into aero and powered through the second lap. The 2nd lap felt better than the 1st, I was having a great race and loving it; as we came back to Mordy for the 2nd time I dismounted the bike and ran into transition. I re-racked my bike off with the helmet on with my shoes grabbed my visor and out on the run we went. My legs hurt badly, they felt heavy and tied, I started to ask did I push too much on the bike, was my legs still lacking KM’s after the broken toe.  As I headed out along beach road my pace was not great but I told myself I can do this. As we moved from the road to beach path I started to cramp up. I stopped stretched and carried on, at the end of the beach path was a hill switch back path up to the road, I tried to run, jog up it in the end I walked up part of it. At the top was a water station which I grabbed water and then headed down towards the turn. At the turn I headed back at the water station I grabbed some water and kept on pushing until we came back down the path. I legs were cramping and hating me, I had to stop at least 3 times. When I was stretching who should pass me on the short course, but Ellie I told her to keep going; I kept going and crossed the line. Cramps didn’t feel great in my legs, I grabbed a few bottles of water and headed over to the tent. I sat on the ground in pain cramp and stretching out. So 2/3’s of the race where great so what went wrong with the run. Firstly of the office most likely over loaded the legs, secondly I think my legs are not at race pace after the broken toe. Lots of work ahead in the winter.

Run Finish

My final time was 2 hours 49 mins and 58 secs, just 2mins off a PB.

Race Report - St Kilda Gatorade Race 5

Last weekend saw both Ellie and I race in the last Gatorade race of the 13/14 season. Ellie signed up for the mini and I signed up for the Sprint. Last race of the season is always big, lots of people, party time and yes, a race.

Saturday morning I did our squad’s pre race program, ride, run and swim, followed by putting up the TA Taj. Around lunch time Ellie and I headed back down to St Kilda for her to register and for us both to collect our kits, I felt racey after the morning’s session. On the way back to the car we walked through transition found our racks then spent the rest of the day went spent having lunch and a movie.

Saturday Morning Prep

Sunday morning at 4:30am the alarm up off, I got up had breakfast, shower and shaved, changed and then headed off to pickup Ellie and her gear and then we headed off to St Kilda, race day! We parked close by got our gear out of the car then headed over to the TA Taj where we found our Head Coach needing coffee and a sleep. You can see why in the photo below.

Ollie in need of Cofee

Ellie and I arranged our Transition gear then headed in transition. After I racked and got my transition area sorted I headed over to help Ellie out. She had most of her stuff right, except I offered a suggestion of racking her bike by the seat instead of the handle bars. She took my advice and swapped the bike around.

We headed back to the tent to chill out before Ellie’s race. Ellie changed into her wetsuit and we walked down to race start. About 2 mins before her wave start I sent her for a warm up swim. As she lined up for her wave start Dave from Supersprint did he’s standard yet me know if there are any loved one’s in the wave. I said Go Grubby, (her nick name) and Dave said “Go Grubby? you can’t call her that!” which I replied with you don’t live with her.

Ellie and TA Girls at the Swim Start

Ellie’s swim looked good but seemed to have issues getting out of her wetsuit as she headed into transition. I raced across the park to the road to catch her as she passed on the bike. Sadly I had to head back to my own race briefing I waited for her on the run but I had to head back to the tent to change.

Ellie heading for T1

Few of us walked down to the swim start got in and did our warm up swims before lining up. The horn sounded and off we went, I felt strong through the whole swim and applied Anna’s my swim coach swim techniques to the swim, the water was flat and fast. I came out of the water ran up the beach into transition, I got my wetsuit off grabbed my sunglass and helmet, unracked my bike and headed out, as I headed out to the ride the bike jumped loose from my hand but I caught it and kept going. Over the mount line and off we went.

Me at the swim start
Flying on the bike

I felt racey and fast and I was, I pushed hard and felt good. I passed lots of athletes and team mates. As I came back my the venue I heard the TA cheer squad (aka the Ironman Crew) yelling out. I dismounted with a little bit of kaos with a few people dismounting. I re-racked my bike and headed out on the run. I didn’t feel great I need a bathroom badly, I passed Julia and Pam found the bathroom did what was needed and kept on running.

TA Cheer Squad

Me on the run home

My run is still crap since breaking my toe. I reached the turn around and headed back to the finish, I could feel something rubbing I thought it was the timing belt so I stopped moved it and started to run again. As I came close to the finishing line the TA cheer squad was at its best; I ran as fast as I could over the line. As I walked a back to the tent feeling sore and happy I saw Ellie who run up and tried to talk me out telling me she had win her event. I was happy for her but I foot was hurting and I wanted to get my shoes off. I sat down took my shoe off and found that the back of my shoe had rubber the back of my foot and caused it to bleed a little. I waited in line for a post race massage and Karn did his best on my lower body. As people finished we all chatted about our races swapping stories when Ollie pulled out a big eskie of beer. Party time, photos were taken beer was drunk and then the podiums started. TA picked up our standard haul of medals and awards.

Sufferfest Race Report

Last weekend saw a road trip to Warrnambool for the Sufferfest race weekend. There were some 5 different events, Kids, Sprint Enduro Sprint, Olympic and Long Course. Last year Andy, another TA team member raced this race and I loved the idea of racing here and it was an idea of a weekend with Ellie was nice. Ellie and I drove down Friday, Warrnambool is around 3 ½ hours away from Melbourne. After the drive down and seeing two customer for my company we found the Hotel and setup base camp. Andy and his family where driving down Friday night, but Luisita another TA team mate had driven down Friday as well. Ellie, Luisita and I meet up for dinner at a local pub and we spoke about riding the bike course on the Saturday morning before Ellie raced Saturday afternoon. From Transition there is a little hill that we wanted to try, while the hill looked huge from the bottom when you started the climb and got to the top it was no worse than others I have ridden on, it felt like a 4% grade. Coming down however was a little more interesting, as the hill opens out you can feel the wind blowing through the cutting I could feel my front wheel getting caught in the cross winds like a sail. In packing the gear for the weekend I also took my factory wheels as well as my race wheels. Sunday morning I would need to make a call on which wheels to race on.

After completing the part of the ride course we rode the run course right down to the turnaround point which was right near our Hotel. At this point Ellie and I went back to the Hotel and Luisita headed back to the starting area. After a shower we headed off for some sightseeing and breakfast and checked out one of the biggest breakwaters I have ever seen. If you look at the photos they do not do it justice nor do the pictures of the waves that come in, but as Warrnambool is right on the South West coast of Victoria, so it goes all the ocean waves.

On the Breakwater

Breakwater at the point

After a feed we walked back the long way to the Hotel chilled out until it was time for Ellie to get ready for her race. We headed down to the Transition area watched the kids race and then Ellie went into transition and got herself ready to race. Ellie’s race went off without a hitch and she had fun, being her first race back since losing her appendix. During this time I collected my race kit for the following day and nice long sleeve jumper for the event. After Ellie had finished and we collected her bike we went back to the Hotel and chilled out before the Pasta Dinner and Q&A with Luke Bell. Around 6 we headed down to the dinner area and joined the other TA Teams and few others we knew through the Melbourne Tri Scene chatted, and then Eat followed by Q&A with Luke. It was certainly different and I enjoyed the atmosphere the night wrapped up just before 8:30; Ellie and I basically went to bed after a little of pre-race preping.

Ellie Post Race in the Ice Bath

4:50am Alarm sounds, and out of bed I got. I had some breakfast followed by a shower and then changed into my Trisuit and checked the Tyres on the bike before we headed off to the Transition area. When we arrived I found a park just up from the Transition area and headed into the Transition area to setup. I racked my bike had my area setup ready to go when Luisita turned up in transition and was directly next to me on the other side of the rack we headed out to the start of the swim leg listened to the race briefing and watched the Long Course guys go off before we got into our Wetsuits and went in for the warm up swim.

Transition Area

Swim Leg look towards the Start/Finish from the Bridge

The river was not clear, but not cold nor any current either. Before too long it was time to line up for our event. The horn sounded and off we went, out to the first buoy then down under the bridge which felt weird as the bridge was very close to the top of my swim stroke. At the turn buoys I felt strong and good back up stream under the bridge again before coming into the swim finish area up the stairs into transition. I got my wetsuit fair quickly on with the helmet and out of transition with my bike. You head out over the bridge to the turn around and then up the hill. Hill felt ok then out to T and along out a little, turn around repeat the other way. Basically the bike course is a T. I came back towards transition on the first lap feeling good at the bridge and turn around had to head up the hill for the 2nd time. This time it hurt but once at the top I felt quick and completed the lap, I came back into Transition and  stuffed up the dismount – no bigger just got it wrong.

From the Bridge/Turn around point back up towards the hill
Heading out for a spin

I racked my bike, on with the runners, grab my visor and headed out on the run, felt good until the first hill which was 1.5km uphill with 4% grade. It hurt but I pushed on during the climb, towards the top I saw Sally, one of the Technical Officials who was out on the bike checking out the run course. I made a quick joke about ensuring she had her helmet on correctly.  I pushed on during the run, running fast when I could and paced myself on the hills. Every 2km was an aid station I grabbed water mainly to cool myself down. At the turn around point, at the breakwater I felt good, this race was the longest run since breaking my toe. As I came back towards the finish I could feel my legs burning as I hit the hills again, but at the top it’s a downhill run to the finish line.

At the finish line

Ellie and I post race

My finish time was 2hr 55m and 05s. – I am happy with this time as it was my fast race back and that the course was very technical (aka Hilly)

Bring on the final few races of the season.
